Tony Wood, president of Texwood Shows, Inc. and producer of the event, explained that the food bank has been a cause he has supported for many years. “This spring's show is a great opportunity for us all to help this dedicated organization,” he said.
Founded in 1985, the Montgomery County Food Bank is a nonprofit center for food distribution. The group takes donated food and transfers it in usable quantities to 49 nonprofit agencies in Montgomery County.
Taylor explained that of the estimated 456,000 people living in the service area, approximately 51,000 – 11.2 percent – live below the poverty level. She added that 40 percent of those served by the pantry are children under the age of 18.
The nonprofit distributed nearly 6 million pounds of food in 2010. Agency food pantries bring food to more than 30,000 individuals per month.
“Everyone has to eat,” Taylor said. “There are a lot more people suffering in this county than people may realize.” Taylor said at the last Home and Garden Show at The Woodlands, the food bank raised more than $3,000 over the two-day event. She hopes the community will come to the event this year and continue to show their support for the Montgomery County Food Bank. |
